Title of Study: "Coming Out" as the Parent of an LGBT Individual

Researcher: Maria Butauski, doctoral student in the Department of Communication at the University of Missouri and Graduate Research Associate for the Institute of Family Diversity and Communication (IFDC; www.ifdc.missouri.edu), is conducting this research. Her research is overseen by advisor, Dr. Haley Horstman, assistant professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Missouri, co-founder of the IFDC.
Purpose: The goal of this research is to better understand the coming out process, or the negotiation of revealing or concealing a child's LGBT identity, from the perspective of parents' of LGBT individuals. Primary investigator, Maria Butauski, is part of the LGBT community, which is why she is interested in generating this research. She hopes to use this research to help others understand the experiences of parents of LGBT individuals.
Participants: In order to qualify for the study, you must be at least 18 years old, have a child who has come out to you as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender, and be willing to participate voluntarily.
Time: In total, participation should take approximately 30 minutes.
Voluntary & Confidential: The survey is completely anonymous and participation is voluntary. You will not be asked to share any identifying information in your responses. You may skip questions at any time.
Risk: There is a possibility of emotional distress associated with this research. Be aware that you may skip or not respond to any specific question or stop answering questions at any time. If you experience emotional distress, consider calling the Counseling Center at University of Missouri at 573-882-1682.
Benefits: The results of this study may help scholars and society, specifically parents and relatives of LGB persons, understand more about the process of "coming out" as a parent of an LGBT individual.
